    Description

Large Natural Petrified Wood Bookend Set - Polished
Petrified wood occurs when a tree is buried under sediment or volcanic ash. The absence of oxygen stops the wood from decaying. Over geologic time, highly mineralized water percolates through the ground, saturating the wood fiber, and the result is petrification. Traces of iron and manganese carried in by the water lend many colors to fossil wood, including shades of brown, yellow, and red.
Basically, petrified wood is the replacement of organic matter by minerals - thus turning a living organism into something that can last forever.
    Most petrified wood is from
    Tertiary Period,
a former official interval of geologic time lasting from approximately 66 million to 2.6 million years ago.
