GUO ZIYI
(697-781) was
the Tang dynasty general who ended the An Lushan Rebellion and participated in expeditions against the Uyghur Khaganate and Tibetan Empire. He was regarded as one of the most powerful Tang generals before and after the Anshi Rebellion. After his death he was deified in Chinese folk religion as the God of Wealth and Happiness.
SHIOKAWA BUNRIN
(1808-1877) was a Japanese-style painter born in Kyoto. He
was a pupil of Okamoto Toyohiko
(1773-1845)
and also studied
Nanga-
style painting and Western-style painting.
Little is known of his early career until the 1850’s when he appears as an established artist working in the Imperial Palace.
He was a major artist whose style had great influence on the Kyoto style of painting in the early
Meiji
era, particularly that of Kishi Chikudo
(1826-1897)
, Morikawa Sobun
(1847-1902)
, Mochizuki Gyokusen
(1834-1913)
and Takeuchi Seiho
(1864-1942)
.
