The 1956 Betsy McCall Doll was created by the publisher of McCall's Magazine and designed to teach young girls the finer points of being a young lady! The Betsy McCall Doll booklet is like new! Not a tear, stain or rip. That is a rarity! As you review the booklet, you’ll see the subject matter that McCall’s thought was important for young ladies. Character development was a key theme and being kind and polite also were considered important topics.
Betsy McCall was first introduced as a paper doll in the May 1951 issue of McCall's magazine. In the magazine, Betsy was described as “five, going on six, and she lives in a little white house with a porch and a yard to play in. Her mother and daddy and Nosy, her puppy, live in the white house too.... Betsy and Nosy and Betsy’s friends play together all the time. And every month from now on they’ll come to play with you too.”
The paper doll character was so popular that McCall's went on to produce a collectible doll based on the original paper doll. The one featured here is the original play doll.
Both Ideal Toy Company and American Character produced Play-Pal size Betsy McCall dolls. Other companies that produced vintage versions of Betsy McCall include Horsman and Uneeda. Tonner Dolls, Inc. has been making Betsy McCall dolls since the 1990s. Vintage Betsy McCall dolls were produced from 1951 through 1963, and the modern Betsy McCall dolls have been produced since the late 1990s. Additionally, Betsy's cousins were also made into dolls like the Patti, Linda, and Sandy dolls.
Betsy McCall dolls have been made in many sizes. The doll clothing featured here are rare and fits a classic 8-inch doll.
The classic 8-inch 1950s Betsy McCall dolls were made of hard vinyl; a few of the larger Betsy McCall dolls were made of a softer vinyl.
